Ireland (XEI) Coastline 1,488 km

Ireland has a long seaplant history that continues until the present day. The use of "Irish moss" (Chondrus crispus) in preparation of food such as blancmange was a pioneering application of the marine biopolymer known as "carrageenan" and the name of this biopolymer has Gaelic roots as the Irish common name for Chondrus.

Irish researchers and seaplant business people are in the forefront of innovation in seaplant applications, aquaculture and phycological research. See the excellent Irish seaweed site for more information about seaplant activities in this leading seaplant country and in the rest of the world as well.
