Harvesting must use good  conservation practices to avoid habitat damage.
Greenish brown plants with thick stipes, strong holdfasts and a cluster of fronds that emanate from the top of the stipe and give these plants the appearance of small palm trees about 50 cm. high.
Grows in the intertidal zone of exposed rocky shores on the west coast of North America.
